The ISACS Network is delighted to partner with Bill and Fred Productions & Circus Factory towards supporting two ISACS artists to participate in their upcoming Dark Clown workshop with Peta Lily.
The successful awardees are ISACS Members Ro Cruanas & Romi Beiroa from Rather Gather. About their expectations for attending the workshop, they say:
I’ve been training in various clowning and physical theatre techniques since 2013, and over the years, these tools have become the backbone of my work as a performer, director and facilitator. Attending this Dark Clown workshop with Peta Lily would be a fantastic opportunity to replenish my toolbox and keep my practice in evolution.
Learning new techniques in clown state, mime, and audience awareness would bring a fresh layer to my work and practice, especially around humor and play. The focus on rhythm, laughter, and improvisation is exactly what I need to keep my performances lively, accessible, and resonant. This workshop is really about refueling, and I’m excited about the chance to go deeper with my skills and create even more engaging experiences for audiences.
-Ro Cruanas
Participating in the Dark Clown workshop with Peta Lily would be a transformative opportunity for me to deepen my clown and physical theatre practice. My work, especially through my drag king performances and my character, Hairy Cuddle, already engages with physical comedy, satire, and challenging societal norms around identity and gender.
This workshop offers unique tools in mime, movement, and rhythm that would enrich my storytelling and enhance the humor and vulnerability I bring to my performances.
The workshop’s focus on “entering the Clown state” and principles of laughter creation aligns with my goal to provoke thought and dialogue in accessible, engaging ways. Techniques in audience awareness and play would strengthen my ability to create immersive, participatory experiences, while improvisation would expand my adaptability in street performance and site-responsive work. Overall, this experience would deepen my ability to bring humor, emotional depth, and dynamic audience engagement into my work.
-Romi Beiroa
