In 2024, the ISACS Network proudly led the 3rd edition of Circus Explored as a Creative Ireland strategic partner for Cruinniú na nÓg. This year’s focus was on continuing to expand the programme nationwide, aligning with Creative Ireland’s Shared Island Initiatives and ISACS’s mission as a 32-county organization.

Circus Explored used the physical creativity of circus arts to foster meaningful cross-community experiences for young people.

Building Momentum through Workshops

Ahead of Cruinniú na nÓg, Ireland’s national day of creativity for young people on June 15th, our Explorer Workshops  introduced circus arts to newcomers in county libraries across Ireland. Working with six youth circus partners – Galway Community Circus, Cloughjordan Circus Club, Dublin Circus Project, Circus Factory Cork, Circusful in Belfast and In Your Space Circus in Derry – and ISACS members, we brought the joy of circus to young audiences everywhere.

On Cruinniú na nÓg day, six open days hosted by our partners schools and five more circus workshops delivered by our members welcomed new audiences from every corner of the island, providing a dynamic introduction to the creativity and inclusivity of circus arts.

Shared Island Youth Exchanges

Circus Explored also brought young people from the youth circus organisations involved on both sides of the border together at key events in Galway, Derry, Belfast and Cloughjordan. Learn more about their journeys as Wayfarer Circus Explorers.

Expanding Impact through Discoverer Workshops

The Discoverer Workshops, now underway, focus on targeted outreach delivered by the youth circus schools to rural and underserved communities they identified in their geographical area.

Investing in Sectoral Development

Recognising the sector’s need for skilled trainers, ISACS invested in circus pedagogy training. These initiatives, which aim to meet rising demand and support trainers in working with diverse groups nationwide, were:

  • ASK Curriculum: In November 2024, trainers from partner schools attended a three-day pedagogical training at Galway Community Circus. This program standardizes training for emerging trainers, enhances collaboration across regions, and strengthens youth leadership pathways.
  • Extraordinary Bodies Training: Trainers participated in sessions delivered by the UK’s flagship company for inclusive performing arts, gaining valuable insights to support both disabled and non-disabled artists.
  • In-House Training: Partner schools implemented in-house mentoring and training programs, empowering young people to gain hands-on experience and develop career aspirations in circus arts.

These initiatives have already yielded positive outcomes. For example, young people at In Your Space Circus are now preparing a Christmas event, inviting new audiences to experience the transformative power of circus.

A Legacy of Connection and Creativity

Circus Explored 2024 exemplifies the potential of circus arts to connect communities, inspire young people, and foster cross-border collaboration. With each initiative, we continue to strengthen our shared commitment to creativity and inclusion across Ireland.
