Irish Street Arts, Circus and Spectacle Network in partnership with Circostrada, ARTCENA and Galway 2020 – are delighted to announce the 3rd edition of FRESH STREET – International Seminar for the Development of Street Arts.
This flagship event of ISACS will bring together professional artists, programmers, researchers, pedagogues, journalists, and policy makers from all over Europe and beyond for a key focus on street arts.
This third edition will take place in the vibrant city of Galway, while preparations for Galway 2020 - European Capital of Culture will be in full swing! Exploring street arts as a tool for social, cultural, political and economic change, it will opt for an innovative conference model by inviting participants to connect with the local community and natural environment, building on an authentic encounter and a singular experience.
FRESH STREET#3 will explore the theme Place and Identity. We are interested in the global and local crises that the world is experiencing currently around borders, migration and nationalism as it relates to our sense of place and identity. How might we cultivate a healthy sense of identity in an increasingly globalized and diverse world? How might we express our place-based pride in a way that is positive, humane and inclusive? How might we preserve local culture while embracing diversity?
We seek to enquire about how place shapes a culture, a community, a people and how responses to place differ according to our own collective memory, history and senses. We are intrigued by topics which challenge our perception of our environment and of our relationship with same. We will examine ways that creativity is inspired by a place and a people and how the two enjoy a fruitful symbiotic relationship.
We wish to discover how street arts contributes to the well-being of our society’s relationship with a place, an identity and a people – as audiences, as artists and as guardians of our civic spaces.
On the agenda of this 3-day seminar: you’ll get the chance to experience a field trip on the Aran Islands, where you’ll meet international artists who will share with you their experiences in working in rural places, you’ll attend outdoor performances, work-in-progress, panel discussions, enjoy professional talks, a plenary session, action-oriented activities, and much more!
Mark the dates in your calendar, ride the wave and embark on the FRESH STREET journey with us! We’ll be awaiting you on the west coast of Ireland!
