ISACS Network together with our partners at Circostrada and in collaboration with Galway 2020 -the European Capital of Culture, presented FRESH STREET#3 – International Seminar for the development of Street Arts.

About FRESH STREET#3

The event took place from 22 – 24th May 2019 in Galway City and Inis Oírr, in association with the Áras Éanna Arts Centre and the National University of Ireland, Galway.

This edition focused on the theme “Place and Identity” which was carefully explored through discussions, immersive walks and artistic presentations.

We were delighted to receive a few words from President Michael D. Higgins who introduced FRESH STREET#3 in the opening words of the programme by saying:

‘Surely this is a time when we need to celebrate the public world, public spaces, and public performance. A privatised world is a lesser world.’

International scope:

Over 260 delegates attended, from 21 different countries, across 4 continents, including: France, Italy, Belgium, UK, Czech republic, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Rwanda, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and of course Ireland.

In advance of the seminar a 2 day private meeting was hosted by the Arts Council of Ireland for policy makers across the world. Over 12 policy makers arrived from UK, Belgium, Ireland, Sweden, Latvia and France to share and discuss topics of mutual interest. This was facilitated by the Circostrada Network and we understand was highly effective in mapping out means to establish data and to grow knowledge of this rapidly developing art form across territory.

Artistic programme:

In addition to the seminar, an extensive artistic programme was presented. The ISACS network launched an open call for artists to apply to present work. Over 115 applications were received from 6 continents, with a range of Irish and International artists included in the final Artistic Programme.  Selected works included:

  • Flowers by Buí Bolg (Ireland)
  • Our Hands by  Vicky Malin (UK)
  • The Ship of Destiny by LUXE (Ireland)
  • New Territories by Deana Kolencíková (Czech Republic/Slovakia)
  • Remnants by Turas Theatre Collective (Ireland)
  • One Sink, Two Float by Studio Eclipse (Belgium)
  • Work in progress of Put a Spell on You by Maleta Company (Ireland)
  • Big Jelly (Ireland)

Establishment of a new artistic residency:

An artistic residency programme was developed in partnership with the Áras Éanna Arts Centre on Inis Oírr through an open call. The successful applicants were contemporary juggler duo: Kate Boschetti (Italy) and Liam Wilson (UK), who together stayed on Inis Oírr for a month creating and building a new site specific work for the island and with the place. They were joined by Andrea Galad who has created a documentary of their time there entitled Out of Land.

Thank you:

ISACS were overwhelmed by the incredible and powerful response to FRESH STREET from both the delegates, stakeholders, partners and the public – Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.
